Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Algebra of complex numbers (addition, multiplication, powers, roots; polar and cartesisian representation, Euler's formula).Functions, continuity, limits, differentiation, curve sketching.Basic techniques of integration (partial integration, substitution), definite and indefinite integrals, fundamental theorem of calculus, improper integrals.Selected topics from calculus: Taylor and MacLaurin series, manipulation of power series.Partial differentiation, determination of critical points for functions of two variables.First order differential equations (separable and linear, inhomogeneous differential equations of first order).Linear differential equations of second order with constant coefficients. Some topics about vectors and matrices.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written exam
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
At the end of the course all students should have a command of mathematics commensurable with average Austrian high school standards. In addition, the course explores selected elements of calculus and linear algebra relevant to chemistry and biology.
