This is a ring lecture about several important model systems that were employed to make fundamental discoveries in biology.
It is held by selected experts on the discussed model organisms:
Verena Jantsch-Plunger: general introduction to model systems and Caenorhabditis elegans
Andreas Bachmair: Arabidopsis thaliana and plants
Christopher Campbell: yeasts
Peter Fuchs: Mus musculus
Wolfgang Miller: Drosophila melanogaster
Florian Raible: Danio rerio
Kristin Teßmar-Raible: Platinereiis dumerilli|
The lecture covers an introduction on the incentives to develop model systems, on important properties of the selected model systems and examples of outstanding discoveries made by using them. Furthermore some newly emerging model systems are presented.
