Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

We invite students with interests in neurobiology during their masters and PhD studies. We will introduce current research topics and then discuss recent and historical landmark publications concerned with the analysis of neuronal circuits and behavior. The objective of the course is to familiarize the students with ongoing research topics and to enable them to critically evaluate primary research literature.

This is an advanced course that requires motivation to read papers and familiarize with topics in the field of systems neuroscience, including advanced experimental, analytical and statistical methods.

Assessment and permitted materials

Each participant is expected to read the current paper prior to each course. Typically, there will be one-week time to read each paper. Expect about one full working day to read each paper carefully and to do research filling gaps in knowledge (e.g. methods, prior papers onto which the current one builds-up etc.). The students are expected to read the paper and to do additional research into the topic independently prior to each course installment.

Each participant is expected to actively participate in the discussions.

Participants are required to install the zoom app and be present with camera turned ON throughout the course.

Presentation: Each participant will choose a paper with a relevant research topic after discussion with the group. The student has to study and familiarize their-self with the background of this research topic and methodologies of the paper, which will require reading additional literature like papers and review articles. The student will prepare a 30min PowerPoint introduction into the background of this research topic and methodologies for the day when the paper will be discussed among all course participants. This part can be done in groups of two, but each participants contribution must approx. 50%.

Participants have to be present at least 80% of all course installments.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Examination topics

The grade will be given 50% based on active course participation and 50% based on the presentation.

Reading list

Will be provided during each course.
