The lecture deals with investigation, analysis, identification and quality control of herbal drugs (leaves, roots, barks etc.) and herbal medicinal products, phytopharmaceuticals and other medicinal products of biogenous origin using macroscopic, microscopic, physical, chemical and biological methods, as well as quantification of active constituents or lead compounds. Essential examples from different pharmacopeias concerning extraction, purification and quality assessment like chromatographic or spectrophotometric methods, gravimetry or volumetric analysis are discussed. Isolation of single compounds of biological origin and identification of the structures using physical or spectroscopic methods are main topics, too.
