Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar is dedicated to consolidate the knowledge presented in the lecture "Nutritional Epidemiology" and will enable students to become familiar with understanding and applying epidemiological methods in nutritional science and interpreting the results.
Using recently published studies students will learn to read papers in nutritional epidemiology critically and to discuss study design, results and conclusions. They will be instructed in approaching to given papers from different standpoints and will have to discuss their views orally. They also have to develop a study design for a given hypothesis, thus experiencing use and calculation of epidemiological estimates.

Assessment and permitted materials

Successful participation will be certified and graded after
(1) oral presentation and discussion of a recent publication,
(2) developing study concepts for selected problems in human nutrition,
(3) conclusive and founded answering of test questions,
(4) solving epidemiological problems and calculations.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The following activities contribute (with the percentages shown) to the final grade:
(1) active participation and fulfilling the demanded tasks at the attendance days (34 %),
(2) written contributions after the attendance days:
- study concepts for given problems in human nutrition (33 %),
- answers to given questions (33 %).

Final grading according to the Österreichisches Schulnotensystem: < 50 % of the maximal score: 5 (failed), >= 50 %: 4, >= 63 %: 3, >= 75 %: 2, >= 87 %: 1.

Examination topics

(1) Reading, evaluation, oral presentation (in German or English) and discussion of a recently published study in nutritional epidemiology,
(2) establishing a study design for a given nutritional problem, ways of data collection, evaluation and interpretation,
(3) answering and discussion of written questions,
(4) training the evaluation of epidemiological studies.
