Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
There will be three elements of assessment:
1) Participation in class. Successful candidates must be judged to have been active and constructive participants in class.
2) Short (assessed) seminar discussion. In the second half of the term, students will be assessed in groups of three having a short 5-10 minute discussion on a given topic.
3) Group presentation. At the end of the course students must prepare and give, in groups of three, a short presentation ¿ on a single topic they have chosen ¿ to a small audience of their peers. Each student will speak for a maximum of five minutes.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
To improve students¿ confidence, accuracy and fluency in spoken English, by concentrating on pronunciation, dialogue or discussion techniques, and giving monologues or presentations.
Examination topics
In-class practice of elements of pronunciation, in-class group-work to practice debating and discussing topics of interest or controversy, group-work outside class to prepare a short presentation.

1) There will be some (limited) work on aspects of pronunciation (mostly stress patterns and timing).
2) Practicing effective discussion techniques (including turn-taking, listening to information, responding to questions and opinions, using hedging and delaying strategies, expressing oneself clearly.
3) Giving slightly longer uninterrupted discourse, structuring and linking the parts of an effective presentation.
