Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course is meant for students with little or without previous knowledge in note-taking and consecutive interpretation. We shall take a stepwise approach to the technique of consecutive interpreting: active listening, analysis, note-taking and adequate interpretation. The main combination will be English-German but, depending on student needs, German-English will also be practiced. Topics will be current.
Assessment and permitted materials
Ongoing review of progress
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students will build up their note-taking and interpreting skills, be introduced to practical situations in which interpretation is needed, expand their vocabulary and strategies for preparation. They will seek to improve their skills as "messengers between cultures" in oral communication.
Examination topics
The course will progressively build consecutive interpretation capabilities, partly based on texts (sight translation), partly using audio and video recordings. Students are also encouraged to reflect on their own performance and the performance of others in peer review stages.
