PLEASE NOTE: The current situation in the ongoing pandemic allows for a return to normal classroom routine.
The FIRST LESSON (on 8 March) will STILL take place DIGITALLY via Moodle. (Students who happen to be at the institute on that day may also attend the lecture in HS 2, from where I will conduct the online lesson).
From the SECOND LESSON (15 March) onwards, for as long as the situation allows, we shall return to the actual classroom (HS 2). Students who have missed a lecture will find slides and audio recordings of the lecture on Moodle.


Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course aims to study the context of text and culture, to assess their interconnectedness, to establish how culture permeates discourse, and forms narration within a culture. It provides an overview on the history and culture of the English-speaking world to assess, in a second step, the phenomenon of collective identity against this background in selected literature.
The focus of this course is on "Britain, Empire and Aftermath".

It is recommended that you begin reading at the beginning of the semester, or preferably even before that. The exam in June 2022 will cover (1), whereas the subsequent resits in October 2022, November 2022 and January 2023 may cover any title on this list.
