Aims, contents and method of the course

This course aims to study the context of text and culture, to assess their interconnectedness, to establish how culture permeates discourse, and forms narration within a culture. It provides an overview on the history and culture of the English-speaking world to assess, in a second step, the phenomenon of collective identity against this background in selected literature.
The focus of this course is on "Britain, Empire and Aftermath".

Assessment and permitted materials

written exam at the end of the semester - classic pen-and-paper exam

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

90-100: very good or 1
80-89: good or 2
70-79: average or 3
60-69: low pass or 4
below 60 is a fail or 5

as well as other shorter texts and excerpts which will be provided either on Moodle or during class

It is recommended that you begin reading at the beginning of the semester, or preferably even before that. The exam in June 2023 will cover (1), whereas the subsequent resits in October 2023, November 2023 and January 2024 may cover any title on this list.
