Aims, contents and method of the course

This course aims to study the context of text and culture, to assess their interconnectedness, to establish how culture permeates discourse, and forms narration within a culture. It provides an overview on the history and culture of the English-speaking world to assess, in a second step, the phenomenon of collective identity against this background in selected literature.
The focus of this course is on "Britain, Empire and Aftermath".

Assessment and permitted materials

extra points: Students may earn up to 10 extra points by continuous contribution to class and/or uploading an assignment related to the quotation walk in the first unit. (10 Points = 10% of the maximum score in the written exam, see also below.)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

90-100: very good or 1
80-89: good or 2
70-79: average or 3
60-69: low pass or 4
below 60 is a fail or 5
