Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

AIMS:
- To get an overview of various settings in which translation and/or interpretation happens (conference interpreting, community interpreting, court interpreting, literary translation etc.)
- Discuss the role of translators and interpreters in society, against the backdrop of sociopolitical realities
- Raise awareness for ethical dilemmas that translators and interpreters can face in various contexts
- Discuss the idea of "professionalism"
- Raise awareness for power relations and hierarchy in interpreting settings

CONTENT:
- Discussing matters of professional ethics, based on relevant literature, studies and own experiences

METHODS:
- Role plays
- presenations (if required)
- discussion in class

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation; short presentations (if required); written final exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attending the course and active participation: 60%
Final written exam: 40%
