Aims, contents and method of the course

Translation of non-fiction books: memoirs, autobiography
Chinua Achebe: There was a country. A memoir. Penguin 2012.
Denys Johnson-Davies: Memories in translation. A life between the lines of Arabic literature. The American University in Cairo Press 2006.

Assessment and permitted materials

Team and individual translations with commentary and glossary; revision of work of another team; follow-up revision of own translations; midterm and final exam; participation in class discussions.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Developing strategies for analyzing non-fiction source texts and planning target texts; research and terminology work; production and revision of translations; get to know the German-language market for non-fiction books.

Examination topics

Students will translate sections of the books, produce commentaries on their work and revise the work of their colleagues; discussions in class.
