Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
How to read academic texts, from one's own discipline and related disciplines; gaining a quick overview; in-depth understanding; understanding the gist; discourse conventions and "globalised" communication; developing your own academic style.
Assessment and permitted materials
Input during the semester: participation in discussions, short written text assignments, oral presentation.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
To develop students' ability to read and understand academic texts produced in English with minimum time and effort. To promote students' willingness to engage in cross- and inter-disciplinary research. Strengthening students' confidence in their ability to understand different communicative styles and to say what they want to say.
Examination topics
Analysis of written and spoken English texts from various disciplines. Text production: students learn how to put their thoughts into practice with written texts and oral presentations.
