Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course examines the politics of (literary) texts banned across several centuries in the Anglo-American world. Examining several key texts banned for violating social, religious, and political norms, we will take a critical look at the cultural and socio-historical contexts in which these texts were written. This will also allow us to discuss the impact of these texts on linguistic norms. The course discusses the emergence of a print industry in Europe, the nature and impact of censorship, standard vs. non-standard language, obscenity and language purism, banned books in translation and the influence of modern-day technology on censorship.
