Please note that instead of the regular class on 13 November, we will have a double class at Kolingasse 14-16 together with the Department of Sociology (chuchotage in research interviews).

On 18 October at 11:30pm, there will be an introductory meeting for a joint project with legal translation (Mag. Scheidl) and subtitling (Mag. Fraller) on the film "Voices Uprising" (more information will be provided during our first class). If you are interested in participating in other parts of the project, you can sign up to one or both of their classes as well.

If you do not attend the first lesson without giving a good reason in advance, you will be de-registered from the course and your place will be given to the next person on the waiting list. If you are on the waiting list or registered during the second registration phase, I recommend attending the first lesson.
If you wish to de-register from this course, please do so by 31 March at the latest. After this time, it will not be possible for you to leave the course.
Continuous assessment of course work. If you miss more than two classes (with good reason), you will receive a semester grade of 5.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Goals: After completing this course, you should be able to:
- prepare for a topic and do the necessary research
- analyse the explicit and implicit communicative purpose of speech acts
- understand and analyse the roles and communicative relationships in a dialogic interpreting setting and employ suitable interpreting strategies
- interpret in dialogic settings using the correct terminology, presenting the content adequately, and in a way that suits the situation while being
- develop strategies for managing difficult and unexpected interpreting situations
- critically reflect on and evaluate your own interpretation and those of others based on a list of criteria

Content:
Building on what you have learned in Basic Competence Translation A and Note-taking technique as well as Consecutive Interpreting I, this class will include the following:
- interpreting in dialogic interpreting settings based on real-world examples (role play)
- research and preparation for interpreting assignments on different topics
- analysing rhetorical and contextual characteristics of authentic settings
- learning and improving interpreting strategies in different settings (consecutive, whispered interpreting, sight translation)
- acquiring and using soft skills: contact with clients, collaborative preparation for interpreting assignments, working as a team, etc.
- analysis of interpretations: self evaluation and peer feedback
- analysis of quality criteria for dialogue interpreting
- optimising output and presentation

Methods:
Work alone and in teams, written and/or oral analysis of your and others' interpretations, preparing and holding presentations or dialogues on assigned topics; creating glossaries, research

Knowledge of note-taking technique is expected.

Assessment and permitted materials

Continuous assessment of course work. Your grade is determined by all written and oral exercises in class, at home, and online. The contributions are weighted as follows:

- analysis of your own and others' interpretations 10%
- active participation (glossaries, research, taking on the role of speaker in your own dialogues, etc.) 30 %
- interpreting in class 60 %

1 (sehr gut) 90 - 100 %
2 (gut) 80 - <90 %
3 (befriedigend) 70 - <80 %
4 (genügend) 60 - <70 %

Examination topics

Continuous assessment of course work - no exam. Researching and preparing information and terminology for the topics of each class, holding presentations and dialogues, interpreting.
