Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
The final assessment will consist of three parts: homework 35%, performance in class 25% and final exam 40%.
Homework will be assessed on a weekly basis. The top 5 marks of all homework submitted will be counted towards the final assessment.
Performance in class refers to student participation in discussions and presentations.
The final exam will take place in the last week of the semester. Students will be given a one-page text to translate from Chinese into the English language in class.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The principal aim of this course is to provide students with competence in translating between English and the Chinese language in preparation for their future professional practice. It will also help students to acquire various translation strategies and practical translation skills via translation exercises and discussions.
Examination topics
Students will be given a specific text to translate and submit prior to each class as platform homework. Translation work shall be completed individually and in some units collaboratively. Translation of the text will be annotated and marked by the lecturer. Issues in the translation of each text will be discussed in the following class. Students are expected to present their translation work, exchange their translation experiences, discuss translation strategies and give feedback to each other in the class.
