Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course uses simulation exercises that enable students to try out and experience interpreting situations and problems in practice and to give thought to the way they feel and react in the process. It looks at the various criteria involved in effective interpretation and the interpreter¿s role as the link between the interacting parties and their conflicting interests and as a neutral linguistic and cultural vector in the communications process. In this way students can obtain an insight into what is required for professional transcultural communication with particular emphasis on oral expression.
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular attendance and active participation required.
Final test possible in the event of insufficient participation.
Final test possible in the event of insufficient participation.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Make the students discover what it feels like to interpret and on that basis to familiarise themselves in depth with the requirements and tools needed in a particular interactive situation for output-oriented interpretation. This practical experience is also designed to assist them in deciding on their future career orientation and the corresponding course of studies and to guide them towards critical and self-critical professional practice in different settings.
Examination topics
Simulation of realistic practical situations in language pairs; guidance on the solution of specific intercultural translation problems. Discussion and teaching of techniques that will assist the students in dealing with attempts by the interacting partners to influence and win over the interpreter and that will help them to become confident and self-assured interpreters. The simulations are used to address aspects of intercultural communication, practical communication problems and professional ethics, where applicable with guest speakers from different disciplines, training in analytical skills, and paraphrasing and introduction to note-taking, depending on prior knowledge.
