Aims, contents and method of the course

Introduction to translation and interpreting (interlingual and intralingual), discussion and practical study of different kinds of oral and written communication, critical discussion of criteria for successful translation and interpreting, preliminary exercises, consecutive interpreting (note taking).

Assessment and permitted materials

Contributions in class and as homework (active participation, short speeches, individual and group translation, study group logs, feedback, research and preparation) and attendance.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The objectives of this course are to teach students how to quickly grasp essential information, how to work with different types of text or speech, and the importance of constantly improving all their working languages. Students will learn about the different requirements for interpreters and translators and explore their own strengths and weaknesses.

Examination topics

Clozing, paraphrasing, memory exercises, sight translation, individual and group translations, holding and interpreting short speeches in class and in study groups (with logs), use of note-taking technique acquired in 'VO Introduction to Interpreting', discussion of conflicts that can arise in interpreting or translation, peer feedback and self-evaluation.
