Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Theory building in qualitative research requires intensive work on empirical material (Glaser / Strauß; Kalthoff et al.). The research workshop primarily serves the interpretation of different data materials collected by the participants in the context of their projects (interviews, texts, images, artifacts). Different interpretative methodologies and methods (ethnography, discourse analysis, biographical analysis, grounded theory, hermeneutic image, film and video analysis) are used. According to the standards of interpretative research, interpretation processes with these methods largely take place in smaller groups in order to ensure the intersubjective validity and quality of the results. In each unit, concrete steps of analysis are carried out together on the basis of the data material brought along by the participants from an ongoing project, and open questions and problems are discussed. In this way, all participants deepen their knowledge of different methods. This makes it possible to compare different methods and to outline one's own approach more clearly.
The central goal of the research workshop is to guide the analysis of concrete materials in the group. This enables the participants on the one hand to follow their path of interpretation in a stable way and on the other hand to combine different methods in a consistent way without getting into methodologically too big inconsistencies. Last but not least, you will be encouraged to form small groups (max. 4-5 participants) in order to continuously work on your material and to benefit from the knowledge of others.
The research workshop is aimed at PhD students who have completed their FÖP and have already collected empirical material for their project. Knowledge of the method(s) chosen for the respective project is required.
Research workshops are a format in the doctoral program, which can be completed either in one semester with 5 or in two semesters with 10 ECTS and is assigned to the area of methods. It is possible to join in the winter as well as in the summer semester.
The language of the texts that are analysed in groups is either German or English. In order to participate in these analyses a sufficient command of German is required.
