Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The seminar's objective is a critical examination of current theories of social reproduction and non-reproduction. Empirically, there is no doubt, that family and educational system contribute to perpetuating existing inequality conditions. Inequality research also indicates that the influence of class habitus is currently increasing again. The seminar picks up a recent discussion in French sociology that deals with the phenomenon of non-reproduction or "class border crossing", associated with the work of Didier Eribon, Édouard Louis, Annie Ernaux or Chantal Jaquet. Studying relevant texts allows to identify both structural parameter and the often painful and contradictory consequences of class transition, often rooted in a resistance to the violence of social reproduction.
