Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The students will learn how the main methods used in population studies are actually operated in research, covering a large range of practices in demography/population studies. The aim is to give them an overview of these methods and of when they are used, so that they can refine the choice of the methods they will use for their Ph.D. thesis.
During the first seminar we will introduce the families of methods and the topics that recurrently use them. Before each following seminar, students will read two texts in which one specific method is used and well described in order to get a sense of its application. The seminar will be participatory, including presentation by the students, the teacher, and discussions.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation: 20%
Oral presentation: 30%
Seminar paper: 50%

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students should attend at least 80% of the seminars.
Reading the texts before each seminar is compulsory.

Examination topics

The mark for oral presentation will particularly rely on a presentation, and on other prepared contributions.
The written examination (seminar paper) will assess whether the students are able to make the link between the research questions asked in population studies and the methods that are used to answer them.

Reading list

Readings will be communicated to the students during the lectures
