Aims, contents and method of the course
This seminar addresses in the first place the needs of the members of the doctoral programme "Austrian Galicia", but it is open to all PhD students interested in the history and research of this former Austrian province
Assessment and permitted materials
Active participation in the course, written book reviews, oral presentation of these reviews.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
This seminar has three overarching objectives.
1. Providing a toolkit for successfully writing a PhD thesis (most important libraries and archives, internet resources, reference management software etc.)
2. An introduction to the history of the region from the Middle ages to the present day in its Polish, Ukrainian and Habsburg-Austrian context. Besides Galicia’s political and economic history, we will also address cultural developments and the multifaceted Galician literature. Students will become familiar with the political and administrative structures of Galicia and the Habsburg Empire in general. Finally, we will discuss the meaning of the Galician heritage in contemporary Southern Poland and Western Ukraine
3. Students will become acquainted with recent scholarly research on Galicia
