Aims, contents and method of the course

The organisation of scientific events has become part of the portfolio of responsibilities of academics. This course aims at developing and refining the skills to plan, implement and review events in the academic landscape. After an introduction to basic project management tools participants of the seminar will analyse case studies of conferences, summer schools and scientific workshops on various research topics in Physics e.g. the VDSP Summer School 2018. Apart from choosing a scientific content tailored to the needs of the intended audience topics of the seminar will include stakeholder relationships, event marketing, financial planning and risk management. The methods of the seminar will be based on the analysis of background literature, case studies as well as hands-on exercises and oral and written reports.
This course is open to PhD students from all areas of physics (theoretical, computational or experimental). The language of communication is English.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation in the seminar, quality of the analysis of case studies, successful completion of hands-on exercises, format and content of presentations in the seminar and of the reports to be handed in before the sessions.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Requirement for a positive grade: attendance (mandatory; at most three session can be missed with prior explanatory statement) and the successful completion of assignments (60% for a positive grade) including the delivery of presentations and reports on a regular basis.

Examination topics

Topics covered by the background literature, case studies, introduction on project management, assignments, presentations and reports.
