Aims, contents and method of the course

Palaentology is based on morphology of fossils which cannot be constrained to test, shells, and bones. We treat fossils as remnants of real organisms which have to be understood in their paleobiological context. The morphology of any modern and fossil organism is a complex end result of all morphogenetic phenomena happening during ontogeny or astogeny. These phenomena are genetically and environmentally controlled and depend on hierarchic set of interactions between structural components. In order to learn how these interactions control the shape, theoretical models of morphogenesis are applied, implemented, and computed. This new course on the theoretical and empirical morphology will give an overview of recent advances in morphogenetic modelling integrated with palaeontology, cell biology, developmental biology, and molecular phylogenetics. We would try to find unexplored areas and find future challenges in various groups of organisms, including protists, plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates.
The course includes lectures, seminars, and workshops. M.Sci. and PhD students interested in complexity of life are welcome. No specific knowledge is required.
