Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Systematic of meteorites: Mesoscopic and microscopic identifying features of meteorites. Classification techniques. Classification of ordinary chondrites by optical microscopy, in reflected and transmitted light. Achondrites. Importance of Lunar, Martian, and Vesta meteorites. Atmospheric entry of meteorites and formation of the fusion crust. Meteorites and impacts. Shock metamorphism in meteorites (shock veins, shock effects on olivine, occurrence of maskelynite). Shock metamorphism and its effects on terrestrial rocks from impact craters on Earth. Practical activity: Classification of ordinary chondrites with the optical microscope.
