Aims, contents and method of the course

Alexander Veselovsky wrote about the syncretism of music of words and dances in primitive cultures. This connection is particularly visible in folkloristic texts but it is also recognizable in certain texts of the Russian Middle Ages. In the 19th century the genre of the vocal salon romance appears. The best examples of Russian poetry were used for it. Later on city romance also appears. At the end of the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century in Russia it receives almost all characteristics of the folklore. In the middle of the 20th century the art of bards becomes popular. Here we can see that music and word are inextricably linked. The course pursues the goal of introducing subject-related texts and programmatic statements into the subject areas, issues and orientations of Russian poetry and music. We will read and listen selected texts from folklore till bards. Each student must also prepare a presentation of the selected topic.
