Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The main focus of this colloquium is on border studies and various concepts of cultural studies (borders, boundaries, groups, identities, etc.), which will be exemplified by the Croat and Slovene ethnic group in Austria. During the semester, students will have to prepare assigned theoretical texts and topics, which will then be presented and discussed in class. Furthermore, two events are planned (reception at minority institutions, reading).

Assessment and permitted materials

As the Colloquium implies continuous assessment of course work, students must attend. Students are expected reading the assigned literature, actively participating and taking part in discussions. The attendants will have to prepare assigned topics and/or reading material, the findings will be presented and discussed in class. At the end of the semester, students need to submit an essay (5 pages).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Basic requirement for positive grading: attendance (students may miss three classes maximum). Assessment criteria: active preparation, participation and involvement during the classes; presentation of assigned topics, essay (submission by the end of January).

Examination topics

There won’t be a written or oral exam.

Reading list and literature will be provided at the beginning of the semester and will be constantly updated on Moodle.
