on the historical background of person and deeds of Ivan Mazepa the Mazepa-legend in Russian, Polish and Ukrainian literature, as well as in German, English and French texts shall be examined.

Aims, contents and method of the course

knowledge of the most important literary texts on Mazepa (Voltaire, Byron,Pushkin...), ability of comparative analysis of fictional texts

samples of text will be provided on the instituts home-page

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

gut (reading) knowledge of Russian, Polish or Ukrainian
