The Caucasian region and Russia - in its various statehoods over time - have a long history: together as well as apart from each other. In this class, we will examine in how far this relationship is reflected in Russian literature from different centuries.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

We will have a look at canonized texts such as Pushkin's "Prisoner of the Caucasus" or Lev Tolstoy's "Hadji Murad" but also newer literature such as Zakhar Prilepin's stories or Anna Politkovskaya's writings about the Chechen wars. In order to develop a framework for analysis, we will also study postcolonial theory.

Assessment and permitted materials

Presentation and a portfolio consisting of regular homeworks

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Our goal is to get to know selected texts in depth as well as developing an awareness when it comes to looking at otherness.

Examination topics
