Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Proseminar's primary aim is to deepen the participants' knowledge of literary theory and to train them to analytically apply theoretical concepts to literary texts. Taking a cue from Roland Barthes, the course will focus on three mutually intertwined theoretical currents: structuralism, psychoanalysis, and Marxism. Concepts appertaining to these three theoretical schools will be exemplified through readings and discussions of a single literary text that can be regarded as a classic of South Slavic literature, Miroslav Krleža's play Gospoda Glembajevi. Furthermore, the course will systematically point to the numerous links tying its central theoretical currents to further interpretative approaches (postcolonial, feminist, etc.). In this way, the participants will be equipped with an extensive overview of theoretical perspectives and developments. Additionally, the participants will develop essential skills in academic writing: through a series of exercises, they will learn to compose bibliographies, to formulate research questions and hypotheses, to segment their arguments, etc.
The teaching language is German.
