Aims, contents and method of the course

The poetry of Atanas Dalchev (Herder's Award at the University of Vienna, 1972) presents a significant turnaround in the development of Bulgarian poetry in the 20s of the twentieth century: it manifests a certain interest in the subject environment, penetrates with subject visions and its image world is marked by unrefined everyday life. But what is the radicalness of Dalchev's poetry, his new worldview, how does Dalchev stand out from symbolism, why does he appear to be a fierce opponent of this established artistic tendency? Are the depictions of A. Dalchev one dimensional or could they reveal a metaphysical depth? How does Dalchev explain the new regular tendencies in Bulgarian literature in his essays and philosophical fragments?
All these questions will be discussed – through the texts of Dalchev (poetry and prose) – during the BA-Seminar.

Assessment and permitted materials

Comosing shorter text analyses; delivering a seminar work at the end of the semester (volume 30 pages) on a chosen topic from the already planned and discussed thematic round.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

General knowledge of the history of the New Bulgarian literature, specific competence for the interpretation of poetic and essayist-philosophical texts.

Examination topics

The works of A. Dalchev – poems and essays-philosophical fragments; emblematic texts of Bulgarian symbolism.
