Aims, contents and method of the course
This lecture course is intended as an introduction to the topics treated in the Doctoral College Advanced Functional Materials (DCAFM) within the FWF doc.funds project "Hierarchical Design of Hybrid Materials". As such, the lecture primarily addresses doctoral students of DCAFM, but all other interested students are welcome as well.The development of new materials with tailored properties is key for addressing the challenges of modern society in a wide range of fields ranging from energy and health to the preservation of the environment. Research in DCAFM focuses on the synthesis, manipulation, characterization, analysis and theoretical description of novel functional materials, ranging from low-dimensional materials with exotic electronic and optical properties to soft matter systems with designed mechanical responses to external stimuli. The lectures, given by the principal investigators of DCAFM, will provide an overview of the research questions of DCAFM and discuss the fundamentals of the experimental and theoretical/computational tools used to address them.Lectures will be held weekly starting on November 18 with the kickoff meeting. Each weak, one the principal investigators of DCAFM will present their project and discuss some background that is relevant for the project and the entire doctoral school.The lectures will be held online on zoom.
Assessment and permitted materials
There will be an oral exam at the end of the semester.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
In the oral exam, the students need to demonstrate their understanding of the topics discussed in the lectures.
Examination topics
The exam covers the entire material discussed in the lectures.
Reading list
Relevant literature will be pointed out in the lectures and references will be included on the moodle page of the course.
