Elliptical galaxies are the most massive stellar systems in the Universe. The lecture deals with the stellardynamical basics of the structure of elliptical galaxies. The competing scenarios of
monolithic and hirarchical galaxy formation are discussed. State-of-the-art chemodynamical models are compared with results from
observations.
