Long-lasting changes in properties of individual neurons or the connection among them is called neuronal plasticity. Neuronal plasticity can be observed from the earliest moments of neuronal development until adulthood.
Here, we will focus on neuronal plasticity that is required for learning and memory formation in the adult under normal conditions. In addition we will discuss neuronal plasticity which may become relevant for the etiology and pathogenesis of diseases of the nervous system. Principles of neuronal plasticity will be presented first followed by discussions of relevant state-of-the-art publications.
