During this course analysis and forecasting methods are discussed which are required for weather briefings of soaring pilots. Besides the interpretation of standard products of weather forecasting (analysis and prediction fields at different pressure levels, satellite pictures, Radar information) special emphasis is laid to the evaluation of radiosonde data. Here the treatment of thermal activity and of wave formation in the atmosphere is treated from a theoretical standpoint as well as in a practical context. Observations by the aid of local surface stations, of pilot balloons and of instrumented gliders conclude the practical exercise. The possibility of a thorough discussion with pilots at briefings and debriefings represent a unique occasion to gain skills for a future professional occupation in the respective field.
