This lecture gives an overview of long and short-term environmental problems from the viewpoint of a chemist. The course covers a range of fundamental topics including ecological criteria, smog, acid rain, ozone depletion, global warming, NOx/ SOx control, catalytic converters, chemical accidents and prevention, communal and hazardous waste management, chemical weapons etc. Moreover the course aims to present an integrated approach with the historical development of industrial chemistry, population growth and sustainability.
Requirements are fundamentals of organic chemistry. Lecture will be held in the summer term (SS), 1 unit (2 h) per week, HS III. Handouts and original literature copies are provided.
