This laboratory course will teach attendants how to specifically detect and identify prokaryotes in environmental and medical samples using FISH with rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes. The experiments performed will provide in-depth insights into parameters relevant for nucleic acid hybridization techniques and will expose students to epifluorescence- and confocal laser scanning microscopy. In addition, attendants will learn how to apply digital image analysis to extract quantitative data from FISH experiments.
