Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

We will give an introduction to algebraic number theory, starting with the notion of an algebraic integer. The material we cover will include the following objects and their properties: ring of integers, integral basis, norm, trace, discriminant, factorization into prime ideals, class-group and class-number, Dirichlet's unit theorem. We will use quadratic number fields and cyclotomic fields als examples and describe applications to Diophantine equations.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Our aim is a thorough understanding of the basic
notions and results of algebraic number theory.
Everyone who takes this class should then be able
to proceed to further material, e.g., class field
theory or applications of algebraic number theory
(e.g., to arithmetic geometry or Diophantine approximation).

Examination topics

The class should be accessible to anyone who
knows the basics of algebra and number theory.
We will introduce necessary notions from commutative algebra as need arises.
