Animal populations and communities pose special challenges in practical
research (mobility, cryptic life habits, difficulties of observation,
very high numbers of species or individuals). This usually necessitates
the application of specific statistical methods to objectively estimate
population and community parameters. I will introduce some important
methods (e.g. population size estimated from MRR-studies, estimates of
species diversity and similarity, measures of population variability).
