In the first part of the lecture we discuss theoretical concepts such as the organismic hypothesis versus the individualistic one, the continuum versus discontinuum concept, diversity thories, in the seocnd how to describe, assess, and aanalyse vegetation (Classification, ordination, modelling, experiments, monitoring, mapping). Basic methods are demonstrated taking the ruderal communities at the biocentre as models. The third part provides an overview on the vegetation classes of Central Europe.
