Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will support doctoral students in writing and presenting an English-language exposé or outline for their dissertation project (regardless of whether they are doing so because their first language is not German or English is simply the prevalent language in their field). The language of instruction and discussion in this course as well as of all materials used is English.
Taking as our point of departure the communicative purpose of exposés and outlines, we will explore 4 levels on which doctoral students can re-work and improve their exposé: text structure, positioning within and relation to the research landscape, conclusive argumentation and English academic language or stylistics. All of these aspects are treated with respect to English as a foreign language and include references to relevant vocabulary, phrases, grammar and means of structuring a text in English. Course participants will furthermore learn about basic presentation techniques for the public presentation of their exposé or outline at the faculty.
The course also covers the process of writing an exposé or outline, beginning with formulating a topic or research questions and hypotheses for the dissertation project. Drawing on techniques such as mind-mapping, participants will learn to draft a preliminary table of contents; they will also learn to adequately formulate the research project's aims and methods as well as a work schedule and a list of resources required
All aspects will be treated with reference to example texts, discussed in the group and practiced through tasks. The second day of the course provides ample time for participants to present, discuss and improve their exposé in the productive atmosphere of a workshop.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course aims to raise doctoral students' competences in the domains of writing and presenting and, specifically, to allow them to successfully write and present academic exposés in English. Beyond this general aim, the course provides the participants with the opportunity to work on their dissertation exposés or proposals.

Examination topics

The course takes place on 2 separate days with the second day scheduled about 2 weeks after the first. This will allow participants sufficient time to apply things learnt on the first day to their own writing projects.
Day 1 provides mostly input, discussion of exemplary texts, reflection and consciousness raising with respect to fundamental discipline-specific norms of scientific writing as well as the communicative particularity of exposés.
Day 2 for the most part takes place as a workshop, i.e. it provides ample opportunity and support for students to work on their own texts.
