Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

nnovation and an awareness of intellectual property issues are becoming increasingly important in the academic world, as Universities work in close partnership with industry, seek to commercialize their inventions and encourage entrepreneurial staff and students to start their own companies. In the morning session of this workshop a general and practical overview of patents will be provided, without assuming any prior knowledge. Among other topics, we will discuss:

- What is a patent?
- How to read and understand patents
- What sorts of inventions are patentable? What are the criteria for patentability?
- The patent application procedure

Participants will also learn about internal University procedures for dealing with inventions. There will be opportunities to ask questions and to discuss specific issues of interest during the workshop.

In the afternoon experts from the European Patent Office (EPO) will conduct a session on Patent Searching skills. The EPO trainers will guide participants through the information available in the Espacenet database, and show them how to develop suitable search strategies to find the most relevant patent documents.

Conducting a meaningful search of the state of the art while designing a research project can help define an appropriate direction for the research, improve the chances of success, and avoid repeating what others have already tried. Patents deliver a wealth of scientific knowledge that complements the information available from journal publications.

The EPO is not only one of the major patent examining and granting authorities, but is also a world leader in developing patent databases. Espacenet is a database of more than 90 million worldwide data sets (inventions) that has been made available free-of-charge to the public by the EPO.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The goal of the workshop is to provide students and staff in scientific disciplines with a general understanding of practical aspects of patents, and how the University of Vienna manages inventions made by employees. Further, participants will be guided in formulating effective patent search strategies in the Espacenet database, thereby identifying the patent literature of greatest relevance to their research projects.
