Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

• Lecture course on the history of gender norms and practices in the Ottoman Empire.
• Weekly readings consist of primary sources (mostly in Turkish) and secondary sources (mostly in English).
• The goal of the course is to attain an understanding of gender in the Ottoman Empire and to tease out a comparison between Ottoman and modern gender conceptions.

Assessment and permitted materials

• 1 written exam in the last semester week (further exam dates available at the beginning, middle, and end of the summer semester).
• The weekly readings (in Turkish, English, and German) are part of the final exam; the exam cannot be passed without reference to these readings.
