150106 VU Political and Economic Developments in Southeast Asia: Country Case Studies (2016S)

Continuous assessment of course work

The aim of this course is to assess current political and economic developments in the eleven Southeast Asian nations. In addition to providing an overview of selected political and economic systems, it will focus on specific political and economic processes and aspects. For instance, it will examine Singapore's growth model, ethnic marginalization in Malaysia and Myanmar, civil society movements in Cambodia, economic transformation in Vietnam or the truth and reconciliation efforts in East Timor after independence. This approach enable the participants to better understand the heterogeneity of Southeast Asia, but to also highlight similarities of the political and economic developments.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

After an overview of the individual political and economic systems, the lecturer will in each unit highlight specific developments in selected countries. He will also introduce various theoretical and methodological approaches, mostly from Political Science and Economics in order to assess selected developments and processes. Starting in week four, in addition to the lecturer's presentation students will present selected political or economic developments in a country of their choice (max. 15 minutes).

Assessment and permitted materials

(1) Active participation in class; (2) monitoring developments in a Southeast Asian country of your choice during a four week period through reading and commenting texts from Southeast Asian newspapers and blogs (four texts; up to 600 words); (3) individual and group presentations (max. 15 min); (4) essay (3000 words), due 31 July 2016.
