Alfred Gerstl is an Associate Professor at the Department of Asian Studies at Palacky University in Olomouc (Czech Republic). Being an International Relations specialist, his research focuses on the Indo-Pacific, notably Southeast Asia (habilitation in 2018). He is head of two EU-funded research projects, namely „The EU in the volatile Indo-Pacific region“ (EUVIP, 2023-2025) and „European-Southeast Asian relations: their current state and future prospect" (EUSEAR, 2024-2026). Before, he was Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow and senior researcher in the EU project „Sinophone Borderlands – Interactions at the Edges” (2018–2022) (all at Palacky University).Furthermore, he is president of the Central European Institute of Asian Studies (CEIAS) and senior advisor at the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES). In 2018/19, he was Associate Professor at Novosibirsk State University (NSU) and at the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg (both in Russia).From 2013 until 2018, Alfred Gerstl worked as Postdoc Researcher at the Department of East Asian Studies/East Asian Economy and Society (EcoS) at the University of Vienna. He is currently lecturer at EcoS, at the Department of Development Studies (also at University of Vienna), the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, the Department for Legal Studies and International Relations at Danube University Krems, and at Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt.
